Craft Room Series: Episodio 4!

If you don’t know what this series is about, I am slowly going over the videos of my Craft Room 360º so you can ask me all the questions you need and you can also organize your own space, with mine as an inspiration.

We’ve already cover most of my work surface: we’ve seen my markers in detail, my embossing powders, all the rest of my desk surface, and now we are going to talk about what I think is the most important aspect for those of us who make cards!

Stamps and dies.

Let me tell you, it was not easy to decide on a system to organize all these elements, because I have a lot of them – fortunately – and it was difficult for me to find them once I had decided which ones I wanted to use.

It was also difficult to browse through them when I didn’t know which one to use and I needed to look at them to get inspired…

Every time I get a stamps set, each one brings its own packaging, and each set has its own size. But actually, when we are looking for something, it’s much easier to browse through all the stamps we’ve got if we standardize their size.

Having this in mind, I adopted the organization system that Jennifer McGuire uses. Yes, I use see-through plastic bags from Avery Elle and white panels from Simon Says Stamp inside. In this way, every stamps set I receives gets sorted into this system.

First I remove the original packaging and I only keep the set which comes on one or two acetate sheets.

I use some white paper from Simon Says Stamp inside a bag from Avery Elle, and the stamps set at the front. The white paper provides a background for the set, which makes it easier to see the stamps. Otherwise, I’d be able to see the set behind them.

If the stamps set is bigger than the Avery Elle plastic bag, I cut the acetate sheet into different sections and I try to put all the pieces inside the bag. If the set is too big for that, I keep it in another box I use for those huge stamps!

Once those sets are inside, I take my label maker and set it so it prints in two lines: in the first one I write the brand, and in the second the title of the set. Why do I do this? So I can link to the materials I’ve used and you can find them if you’d like to buy them.

If I didn’t and I didn’t have the original packaging either, it would be almost impossible to remember the brand and the name. So we wouldn’t be able to find the sets in online stores!

All these plastic bags containing my stamps are stored horizontally in some boxes I found at a home decor store and a supermarket – the difference between them is barely noticeable. They seem especially designed for these Avery Elle bags so I implemented them at once!

The current dividers are filling in for the ones I might implement later. I made these in November and I am waiting to see if they work well. I chose some topics at random to help me look for stamps and I put them in place. They seem to work well so far, so they might actually stick around.

This is the sorting system:

  • For coloring: all those stamps that are made up only of lines or borders. So, after you stamp them, they need to be colored to come alive. Or at the very least in this category I keep all the sets that are mostly made up of this kind of images.
  • Christmas: You don’t need any explanation, if the set of stamps features Christmas-related images or phrases, it goes here.
  • Phrases and Alphabets: Some stamps sets are made up of the letters of the alphabet plus some symbols and numbers that you need to write any phrase, and they come in different typographies. Those sets go into this section. Just like the sets that only include phrases and no – or very few – images.
  • Geometrical designs: Some stamps set feature geometrical shapes, whether solid or just the borders. Whatever the case, they go into this section. They are very practical to stamp the same image in different places or colors.
  • Background and reverse: some bigger stamps are “background” stamps because they were designed to provide a background for the card and have the right measures for it. These stamps, unless they are 6×6, go into this section. The “reverse” stamps are the same but what we stamp is just the line-work of the image, which is noticeable, but in white, that is, without ink. The ink is all around it.

Flowers and constructs: These “construction” stamps are very popular now, they are the ones where you stamp in different layers to create an image, using different stamps and probably different colors to come up with the final image. Those stamps, and all those including flowers, go here.

In this video, you can see how I organized all these stamps and dies.

Lo mismo hago con los troqueles.

I do the same with the dies.

I store them according to size in big or small Avery Elle bags and I keep them all together in one box, just like the one for stamps, that I bought in Ikea. I haven’t made a sorting system yet, but I’ve been thinking about it because every time I need a die, I end up mixing all of them!

The wooden stamps I keep on a similar box, also from Ikea but bigger. They are all inside because they tend to take up more space, and in this way I know where they are and they don’t get all dusty. Usually, I pick them up when I already know that the image I am looking for is in a wooden stamp. So I don’t really need a complex system for them.

The biggest stamps, and those made of foam, which do not fit into the Avery Elle bags, I keep in big drawers and also in boxes, so it’s easier to manipulate them when I am looking for them!

I sort these out in this way: the stamps that are bigger than the bags, but I haven’t used yet or I am thinking of using soon, go inside a drawer and are within easy reach. You can see how I store them in this video:

The other foam stamps that do not fit into the Avery Elle bags, but that are also older and have been used a lot, or maybe those I don’t often find a use for, go into another drawer, in boxes where my husband’s shirts used to come in; this helps me manipulate them if I am looking for one in particular. You can see what I mean in this video.
