I’ve been longing for some free time for a while, so I could play with a stamps set like this one.

Some people call them construction stamps because the image – flowers in this case – comes in different layers, and each layer is a special stamp.

The idea is to achieve a very realistic or three-dimensional effect in the final look of the flowers. If we stamp precisely where we should, these stamps really look fantastic.

There’re a few secrets to this technique, which I discovered after throwing my early attempts to the trash because they looked like an arty blur more than an actual flower. But I share those secrets with you here so you can give this stamps a try without hesitation if you’ve got them at home.

1. Follow the instructions that Altenew shares in this picture.

You can download that picture to your computer by clicking HERE.

In this image you can see all the flowers of the set I’ve used today called Vintage Flowers. To get the stamping in different layers right, you need to follow these tricky instructions to the letter. I say tricky because I didn’t find it all that clear until I took a closer look. But this is the solution to the puzzle. You need to match the second layer to the first one precisely, the red or blue mark – depending on which layer you are stamping.

2. Start from the darkest ink and move onto the lightest one. I used to start the other way around and it was very difficult to get it to look good.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of this, all you need is a set of construction stamps like this one from Altenew that I use in this video, and inks of progressively darker colors. Although there are some inks that come with what’s called a second generation stamping effect, and that enables us to stamp two layers, one in the original color, and the second generation in a lighter shade. 😉

You can see how I do it in the video below, and if you’d like to take a closer look, CLICK HERE so you can watch in HD and subscribe to my YouTube channel.
